The Colonists

Here are some of the opinions of the Colonists.

Many colonists believed that the taxes that the British government had imposed on the colonies were unreasonable. John Adams said that the Stamp Act was "set on foot for my ruin as well as that of Americans in general."

Other colonists felt that it was unjust that the colonists did not have representation in the government. Some colonists felt that all men were equals and that living under a king was like slavery. Thomas Paine was one of the colonists who questioned why one person and all of his descendants were allowed to rule over others forever. John Hancock also said, "I will not be a slave. I have a right to the liberties and privileges of the English constitution."

Some colonists felt that they were willing to risk their lives and their safety in order to gain freedom. Benjamin Franklin once said, "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." And Patrick Henry famously said, "give me liberty, or give me death!"
