Samuel Adams

"The country shall be independent, and we will be satisfied with nothing short of it."

WHO HE WAS: Samuel Adams was born in 1722 in Boston. His family was very wealthy and attended Harvard University. While there, he even wrote a paper stating that people have a right to stand against their government when it was being unfair. He was at the center of the many protests that occurred in Boston during the years before the Revolutionary War as was his cousin, John Adams. At the beginning, he was hopeful that people could bring about a peaceful change in how the colonies were governed. He didn't think that it was right that the colonists should be so heavily taxed and he also thought that the colonies should be able to elect their own governors. He had an excellent speaking ability and shared his ideas at town hall meetings and wrote newspaper articles. He was one of the organizers of the "Sons of Liberty" and he led the Boston Tea Party rebellion. He served in the First Continental Congress and the Second Continental Congress and was a signer of the "Declaration of Independence."
